  • Description

FLOODS IN INDIA AND EAST PAKISTAN HAVE AFFECTED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN THE PAST FEW DAYS. IN THE STATE OF BIHAR IN NORTH-WEST INDIA THE FLOODS HAVE COVERED THOUSANDS OF SQUARE MILES OF FLAT LAND AND ENGINEERS ARE WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO PROTECT TOWNS. IN EAST PAKISTAN MASSIVE RELIEF OPERATIONS WERE MOUNTED LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY) AS MONSOON FLOODS SPREAD OVER AN AREA OF 30,000 SQUARE MILES.

THE FLOODS HAVE COME TOWARDS ONE OF THE WORST YEARS OF NATURAL CALAMITIES IN INDIA. IN BIHAR THEY HAVE AFFECTED AN AREA OF ABOUT 3,700 SQUARE MILES, DAMAGING OR SUBMERGING SOME 25,000 HUTS AND AFFECTING MORE THAN THREE-AND-A-HALF MILLION PEOPLE. IN SOME AREAS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CUT OFF FROM FOOD AND MEDICINE, AND AT LEAST 10 HAVE BEEN DROWNED.

IN MANY PARTS THE MAIN ROADS WERE FLOODED, AND THE TOWN OF MAZAFFARPUR WAS THREATENED BY THE RIVER, BURHI GANDAK, WHICH WAS ERODING ITS EMBANKMENT. ENGINEERS WERE WORKING TO PROTECT THE TOWN, BUT THE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES AND MOVE TO SAFER GROUND.

IN EAST PAKISTAN THE MONSOON FLOODS HAVE AFFECTED AN ESTIMATED 20 MILLION PEOPLE. REPORTS SAY THAT 20,000 VILLAGES HAVE BEEN INUNDATED AND AUTHORITIES AT SIRAJGANJU ON THE RIGHT BANK OF THE SWOLLEN BRAHMAPUTRA RIVER WERE MAKING PLANS FOR LARGE SCALE EVACUATION.
