  • Description

In Paris, more than a thousand demonstrators staged a protest on Wednesday (28 March) outside the Latin Quarter canteen for Jewish students which was bombed the day before, leaving 33 people injured.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators came from anti-racist and student groups. As they protested, the president of France's Jewish community, Alain de Rothschild was meeting Prime Minister Raymond Barre to demand better protection for buildings used by the Jewish community in the capital.

Speakers at the demonstration said the lunchtime attack represented "unwarranted anti-semitism." The students using the canteen, they said , were "pacifists who had threatened nobody." After the attack, two different and hitherto unknown anti-Zionist groups opposed to the new Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty claimed to have planted the bomb which badly destroyed the restaurant. It brought a warning from France's Chief Rabbi, that anti-semitic violence in France had never been so strong.

Many of the demonstrators blamed the palestine Liberation Organisation for the attack, but the PLO representative denied this. He said he had conveyed his regrets to the Chief Rabbi.
