  • Description

In Portugal, four bombs have exploded, destroying cars and farm machinery but causing no casualties. The explosions happened on Sunday (21 October) in the Alentejo wheat belt -- scene last month of clashes between police and Communist party supporters over plans to return State-appropriated land to its former owners. A few hours before the explosions, Communist Party leader, Alvaro Cunhal, had addressed gathering of supporters in the Alentejo capital.

SYNOPSIS: Some five thousand Communist supporters turned out to greet their leader, who had come to the town of Beja to canvass support for next month's elections.

Senhor Cunhal's popularity is at its highest in this farming region. it was the Communists who initiated the programme of land-takeover following the 1974 revolution, and recent Government moves to return land to its former owners has met strong opposition from local farm workers. Last month, two Communist members were shot dead as they fought police attempts to recover seized land. Many thousand of people in the surrounding countryside now work on collective farms and they are looking to the Communists to defend them.

Land reclamation was top of Senhor Cunhal's election priorities. He said the Communists were sure to defeat what he called the "reactionary forces" that were seeking to destroy the collective farms. He said he was confident the Communists would improve on their present forty seats in Portugal's 263-seat Parliament. They face string opposition, though, from the rival Socialist Party and from a recent alliance of Portugal's three biggest right-wing parties.
