Background: Bangladesh could soon become one of the major silk producing countries in South East Asia. Demand for Bangladesh silk is increasing rapidly, and several Western countries have given financial assistance to help the industry develop.

SYNOPSIS: Silk was once regarded as the prestige product of Bangladesh -- and now its reputation is being restored. The industry is still very much a 'handloom' operation, and although the country earned millions of dollars last year from silk exports, it has not had the means to boost production and meet the increasing demands from overseas.

But from now on, foreign assistance from the United States, Germany, France and the Netherlands will make it possible for Bangladesh to get out on a rapid industrialisation programme. At least three big factories are planned for next year -- and that will help to double the current output. It will also bring the export earnings from silk much closer to that of jute -- the country's main export. Japanese industrialists have already visited Bangladesh with proposals to reorganise the silk industry under joint collaboration, and a team of experts from France is currently here to look at the possibility of technical assistance.

The world's silk consumers say Bangladesh has a great wealth of artisans -- vital to build up the silk industry there. Their expertise will help the country make a break-through in an area dominated by only a handful of developed countries. A major attraction at industrial exhibitions world-wide are silk saris from Bangladesh. They are so much in demand that the full supply is always sold out before the exhibitions end. For Bangladesh silk -- next year looks like being the best ever.
