    THREE RIDERS AMONG THE 29 ENTRIES HAD CLEAR FIRST ROUNDS TO QUALIFY FOR THE JUMP-OFF. THEY WERE MISS WESTWOOD, MR WELCH AND HERMANN SCHRIDDE, OF WEST GERMANY, THE REIGNING EUROPEAN CHAMPION.

    IN THE JUMP-OFF, HERR SCHRIDDE WENT ROUND FIRST, BUT INCURRED 12 FAULTS WHEN HE FELL AND ALSO BROUGHT A FENCE DOWN. HE WAS RIDING KAMERAD. THE TWO BRITISH RIDERS EACH HAD FOUR FAULTS, SO WENT FORWARD TO ANOTHER JUMP-OFF. IN THIS ROUND AS WELL BOTH RIDERS HAD FOUR FAULTS, SO THE PRIZE WAS SHARED, WITH HERR SCHRIDDE TAKING THIRD PLACE.

    TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD MISS WESTWOOD RODE IRISH-BRED MAVERICK VII AND MR WELCH RODE BRULE TOUT.
