Background: Tens of thousands of people filed past the flag-draped coffin of David Ben-Gurion on Sunday (2 December) to pay their last tributes to the architect of modern Israel as he lay in state in the courtyard of the Knesset (Parliament) in Jerusalem.
Mr. Ben-Gurion, the country's first Prime Minister, died Saturday (1 December) in a Tel Aviv hospital at the age of 87, after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage two weeks before.
His body was flown to Jerusalem early Sunday morning by a military helicopter. After lying in state for 24 hours,he was to be buried at his desert kibbutz home on Monday.
A guard of honour stood at attention around the coffin, which was placed on a black podium with two beacons burning on each side.
First to pay respects to the country's "grand old man" were President Ephraim Katzir, Prime Minister Golda Meir and members of her cabinet.
Mr. Ben-Gurion was born in Ponsk, Poland and emigrated to Israel in 1906, when the country was still under Turkish rule. His greatest hour was probably on the night of May 14, 1948 when he announced the establishment of the tiny State of Israel.
It was estimated that by kate afternoon on Sunday, more than a hundred thousand people had passed the coffin, to bid farewell to Israel's elder statesman.
