    BRITAIN HAS ORDERED THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER, H.M.S. VICTORIOUS, TO CHANGE HER ROUTE FROM FREMANTLE, IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA, TO SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA, TO AVOID A DISPUTE WITH INDONESIA OVER THE USE OF THE SUNDRA STRAIT.

    THIS FOLLOWS AN ANNOUNCEMENT BY INDONESIA THAT IT IS BEGINNING A NAVAL EXERCISE LASTING ONE MONTH IN THE STRAIT, WHICH IT REGARDS AS PART OF INDONESIAN TERRITORIAL WATERS.

    THE VICTORIOUS, ESCORTED BY THE DESTROYERS CAESAR AND CAVENDISH, IS RETURNING TO SINGAPORE AFTER A VISIT TO FREMANTLE, AND IT WAS PLANNED TO USE THE SUNDRA STRAIT.

    INSTEAD, THE SHIPS WILL NOW USE THE LAMBOK STRAIT, AT THE OTHER END OF JAVA, SOME 700 MILES TO THE EAST.

    THE VICTORIOUS, OF 30,530 TONS, IS EQUIPPED WITH SOME OF BRITAIN'S NEWEST STRIKE AIRCRAFT, INCLUDING THE GENERAL-PURPOSE GANNET. SHE IS 700 FEET LONG.

    LAUNCHED IN 1939 BUT VIRTUALLY RE-BUILT IN THE NINETEEN-FIFTIES, THE VICTORIOUS IS PART OF THE FLEET AIR ARM'S SPECIALISED ANTI-SUBMARINE UNIT.

    RECENTLY THE VICTORIOUS TOOK PART IN A SERIES OF SEATO EXERCISES IN THE INDIAN OCEAN.

    THE VICTORIOUS SPENT ONE WEEK AT FREMANTLE, DURING WHICH HER 2,200 OFFICERS AND MEN WERE GIVEN SHORE LEAVE.

    COMMENTING ON THE VISITS TO AUSTRALIA OF THE VICTORIOUS AND THE AMERICAN NUCLEAR POWERED CARRIER, ENTERPRISE, THE PREMIER OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA, MR. BRAND, SAID THEY HIGHLIGHTED STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE BOTH BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES PLACED ON THE INDIAN OCEAN.

    THE NEW ROUTE WILL ONLY SLIGHTLY DELAY THE VICTORIOUS IN HER RETURN TO SINGAPORE.
