  • Description

A new local school of agriculture in Abidjan was opened by Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Biogny on Thursday (4 May).

Built at a cost of 700 million france (CFA) (GBP1.2 million sterling approx.), the school was financed by the European Development Fund (FED) of the European Economic Community (EEC).

The new school is residential, with rooms for 144 students, and contains an amphitheatre, classrooms and laboratories as well as a restaurant and central meeting hall.

A 20 hectare farm (50 acres approx.), divided between cattle and crop production, surrounds the school. The Ecole National Superieure d'Agronomie (ENSA) which administers the school was created in September 1965 to run a full education programme for the improvement of agriculture in the Ivory Coast which brings 85 per cent of national revenue and accounts for 90 per cent of the country's exports.

In the presence of members of his government and Mr. Jacques Ferrandi, Director-General of the EEC, responsible to the development fund, President Houphouet-Boigny toured the farm and school buildings after cutting the official ribbon, opening the school.

Mr. Ferrandi made an address and was later presented with the Order of the Ivory Coast.

SYNOPSIS: When President Houphouet-Biogny arrived at the school for the opening, he was greeted by Director-General of the EEC, Mr. Jacques Ferrandi and Mr. Abdoulaye Sawadogo, the agriculture minister. Members of the government and many of the school's three hundred students attended the opening.

Mr. Ferrandi, who has special responsibility for aid to countries outside the community through the fund, told the opening that the agriculture school was a symbol of solidarity between Europe and Africa.

The guests applauded when the Order of the Ivory Coast was presented to Mr. Ferrandi.

The new school, with a twenty hectare farm, will accommodate about three hundred students. Several of the scholarship winners received awards from Mr. Ferrandi, and were congratulated by the President.
