    CLAUDE CHAYET'S WORK DURING THE NEXT TWO MONTHS WILL BE TO PREPARE THE FRENCH EMBASSY FOR THE AMBASSADOR AND TO NEGOTIATE OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS WITH THE CHINESE AUTHORITIES.

    HIS MOST SPECIFIC TASK WILL BE TO PRESS FOR THE RESTORATION TO FRANCE OF THE ELEGANT FRENCH EMBASSY COMPOUND IN THE HEART OF PEKING'S OLD "LEGATION QUARTER". IT WAS REQUISITIONED BY THE CHINESE AUTHORITIES IN 1952 AND HAS BEEN USED SINCE THEN AS AN OFFICIAL GUESTHOUSE.

    TECHNICALLY, THE EMBASSY COMPOUND, CONSISTING OF AT LEAST SIX GREY-BRICKED BUILDINGS SET AMONGST LAWNS AND TREES AND SURROUNDED BY A HIGH WALL, IS STILL FRENCH PROPERTY.
