  • Description

Israeli Security Forces have predicted a possible renewal of Arab commando activities in Jerusalem, following a missile attack on the city on Wednesday (7 April).

The rocket fell in the Aub Tor quarter but caused no casualties or damage -- except for a small crater int eh ground. The Israeli Army said that it was the first rocket attack in Jerusalem for nearly two years.

Reuters quoted security and defence officials as saying that the incident seemed to indicate that Arab guerrillas were reviving commando style actions because of recent clashes involving demonstrators and Israeli security forces during which nine Arabs died.

The rocket in Jerusalem came down at a point not far from the United Nations Headquarters. No-one had claimed responsibility for the attack by Thursday (8 April).

Israeli police said that the rocket used int eh Jerusalem attack was a Czechoslovak-made 130 millimetre Katyusha shell. The police found the likely firing point in the Kidron Valley, south of Jerusalem. They also discovered two unused Katyusha rockets and three rocket launchers.

The point is about two kilometres for Abu Dis, where two weeks ago an 11 year old Arab boy was shot during an anti-Israeli demonstration. He later died in hospital. A soldier suspected of shooting at the boy is being held by the police.

Meanwhile a Palestine refugee came at Jenin, near Nablus, was under curfew on Wednesday (7 April) after clashes between refugees and Israeli security forces in which several youths were injured.

The refugees were demonstrating against Israeli occupation of the West Bank. Elsewhere, dozens of demonstrators were tried summarily by military courts and received heavy fines.

Strong security patrols were out in most West Bank towns as canvassing went on for the municipal elections next Monday (12 April).
