    Background: SOKH SANN, KAMPUCHEA

Vietnamese troops supporting the government of Kampuchea have launched a major offensive to dislodge rebel control of areas near the Thai border. It has caused serious civilian casualties. An artillery and infantry attack on Sokh Sann, four villages controlled by the rebel Khmer People's National Liberation Front (KPNLF) left several dead and reduced wooden buildings to burnt-out shells. The Vietnamese forces say they have driven the KPNLF, led by former Prime Minister Son Sann, out of this mountainous area and further towards the Thai border. But Son Sann has said the battle has proved his forces are capable of fighting the Vietnamese. In these pictures, the KPNLF forces are seen laying land-mines against the Vietnamese outside Sokh Sann. The latest Vietnamese attack is part of a dry-season offensive launched against guerrilla factions in mid-January. A main target is to cut off the rebels from the Thai border where many of their supporters have sought refuge.
