  • Description

In the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(North Korea) the birthplace of the sixty-year-old premier, Kim Il Sung, is now a national park.

Kim Il Sung is revered in North Korea in the same way that Chairman Mao T??? Tung is venerated in the People's Republic of China. Kim's birthplace at mongyangdas abut 9 miles(15 kms) outside P'yongynag is a place of pilgrimage for the Koran people. They come to look at the house where Kim grew up -- and are shown a rock where Kim is said to have sat as a boy writing patriotic pastry. The wholes area has been planted in trees and shrubs - including the mauve azalea, symbol of the North Korean revolution.

In the capital itself, a huge status of Kim It Sung has recently been erected in front of a revolutionary museum. The status stands more than 60ft (18km) high and is flanked by statuary depicting the struggles of the North Korean people against the Japanese in 1945, and against the United States in the Korean War of the early fifties.

Huge banners deck the streets of P'yongyang at present. They mark the anniversary of the founding by Kim Il Sung of the Korean Liberation Army.

SYNOPSIS: A park at Mongandas in North Korea. It's been built around the site of the tiny village where the country's premier, Kim Il Sung was brought up. The park has become a place of pilgrimage - and each month thousands of Koreans tour the grounds -- and indication of the profound respect the people hold for their sixty-year-old leader. This whole park - with its ornate gardens and lakes, and cars-fully tended trees and shrubs is intended as a people's tribute to Kim Il Sung.

Schoolchildren from all over North Korea are among the visitors who come here every day. In these buildings Kim Il Sung lived as a boy - the son of school teacher. Inside the buildings are chests, said to contain family belongings, and farming implements said to have been used by Kim's parents. Blossom trees and shrubs have been planted in abundance -- providing an attractive area of parkland just 9 miles from the capital P'yongyang. The mauve azalea is North Korea's revolutionary flower.

Everything in the park has a significance - like a rock where Kim Il Sung sat as a boy to write patriotic poems.

Veneration of Kim Il Sung is not confined to national monuments like Mongyangdas. This is the capital, P'yongyang - decked in posters which celebrate the anniversary of the founding by Kim Il Sung of the Korean Liberation Army.

Government buildings in the capital display huge photographs of Kim Il Sung - and national flag of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Streets nearby are decorated with banners and posters praising the success of Korean troops under the inspiration of Kim in the struggle against imperialism....often depicted as the United States.

A huge status of Kim Il Sung is a new attraction in P'yongyang. It was erected to mark Kim's 60th birthday this year. Hundreds of people gather at the status every day to gaze at the 60 foot high image of the leader they know as the "iron-willed, ever victorious commander of the Korean people."
In North Korea, Kim Il Sung is venerated in much the same way as Chairman Mao Tse Tung in the neighbouring People's Republic of China.

Chollima Avenue is one of North Korea's finest tributes to its premier. It is said the entire avenue took just six months to built - and the work was personally supervised by Kim Il Sung. Towering over the Avenue is the Chollima - the traditional flying horse of Korea. In the years since the Koran War - in which P'yongyang was all but destroyed - the horse has become the symbol of the great leap forward in industry.
