  • Description

Governor Orcal E. Faubus of Arkansas was filmed in Little Rock May 27 as he spoke to the Citizens Committee about the School Board election of May 25 when three racial segregationist Board members were voted out of office.

At Little Rock the Central High School, where integration was enforced with troops in the 1957-58 term, was closed by Governor Faubus along with three other high schools last autumn. Later, the three segregationist members of the local School Board dismissed 44 teachers over the heads of the three moderate Board members. Following a fierce dispute between the two parties, last Monday's election was held and the segregationists who had the Governor's backing were defeated. The vacancies on the Board were to be filled by the County Board of Education which has so far not been directly involved in the integration battle.

Commenting on the defeat of the segregationist School Board members Governor Faubus said at his press conference he had no plans for the moment to turn the closed schools over to the School Board. He declared this defeat was not a victory for the integrationists. "In fact", the Governor said, "the issue was not integration or segregation, but only the dismissal of 44 of the public teachers."
