Background: IN BRITAIN TODAY (SUNDAY) A BIG CROWD WAS OUT TO SEE THE SCRAMBLE OF THE YEAR - A TOP MOTO-CROSS EVENT ON THE BRANDS HATCH CIRCUIT IN KENT.

THE 1000 CC EVENT OVER 25 LAPS WAS WON BY A. LEE OF BRITAIN RIDING A METISSE 500. THE COURSE OVER NEARLY EIGHT MILES (ABOUT 13 KMS) IS NOTED FOR ITS RUGGED RIDING CONDITIONS.

ON THE STEEP JUMP, MUD AND WATER FROM THE GRASS TRACK FORMS TREACHEROUS PATCHES - RIDERS FOUND IT EASY TO PART FROM THEIR MATCHES.

ON THE 'S' BEND, THERE ARE STONES AND MUD GALORE - AND THE ONLY COMFORTABLE POSITION IS IN THE LEAD. AFTER THE FAST STRAIGHT, THE COURSE RUNS THROUGH A WOOD. IT IS STEEP, SLIPPERY, INFESTED WITH TREE-ROOTS AND POT-HOLES.

SOME RIDERS FLOUNDER, OTHERS TAKE TO THE AIR. THE WISEST TAKE IT STEADILY - ONE CAN'T WIN ON ONE'S NOSE, OR IN ORBIT.

LEE, 26, IS THE TALLEST RIDER IN THE SPORT, HE IS 6FT 4IN. HE BEAT A FIELD OF OVER 30 RIDERS FROM TOP BRITISH AND CZECHOSLOVAKIAN FACTORIES. J. SCOTT OF BRITAIN ON A 500 CHENEY-BSA WAS SECOND AND COMPATRIOT ALAN LAMPKIN ON A 441 BSA CAME IN THIRD.
