  • Description

HIGH WINDS AND ROUGH SEAS CAUSED MISHAPS TO BOTH COMPETITORS IN THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL CATAMARAN CHAMPIONSHIP RACE BETWEEN AUSTRALIA'S "QUEST" AND BRITAIN'S "HELLCAT 111" AT THORPE BAY TODAY (TUESDAY); AND ALL WAS IN VAIN FOR THE CONTEST WAS DECLARED "NO RACE".

THE AUSTRALIAN BOAT HAD TO DROP OUT OF THE RACE WHEN ITS FORESTAY BROKE, AND ALTHOUGH "HELLCAT 111" LOST HER CREWMAN OVERBOARD FOR 20 MINUTES, THE BRITISH BOAT LIMPED HOME.THEN CAME THE SHOCK ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE JUDGES COMMITTEE THAT A SHORTENING OF THE COURSE WAS NOT IN ACCORD WITH THE RULES, AND THE RACE WAS DECLARED VOID.

THE RAIN AND WINDSWEPT THAMES ESTUARY WAS THE SCENE OF MUCH EXCITEMENT FOR THE CREWS OF THE TWO BOATS AS THEY BATTLED THROUGH THE HEAVY SEAS."QUEST" SET THE PACE FROM THE START OF THE DAY'S RACE - PREPARED TO RISK ALL, KNOWING FULL WELL THAT THE BRITISH BOAT HAD ONLY TO WIN THE RACE TO TAKE THE RUBBER.BUT THE AUSTRALIANS RAN INTO TROUBLE WHEN THEIR BOAT BURIED HER HEAD DEEP IN THE WATER WHEN ROUNDING THE MARKER BUOY.THE WIND BY NOW HAD RISEN TO ABOUT 25 KNOTS, MAKING CONDITIONS ARDUOUS.IT WAS THEN THAT "QUEST" LOST HER FORESTAY, AND THE SPECIAL SLIDING SEAT FITTED TO THE BRITISH BOAT COLLAPSED, TIPPING THE CREWMAN INTO THE SEA.

THE FOURTH RACE WILL BE SAILED OVER THE SAME COURSE TOMORROW - WITH THE BRITISH TEAM POISED TO WIN THE CONTEST AND THE INTERNATIONAL TROPHY.
