    Background: SYDNEY, N.S.W., AUSTRALIA

Sweden's Bjorn Borg signalled that he is determined to return to the number one ranking in world tennis by winning the Akai challenge in Sydney, Australia on November 7. He defeated arch-rival John McEnroe of the U.S. over the four sets. In an earlier match at the Horden Pavilion, Czech Ivan Lendl -- serving from the far court, outclassed New Yorker Vitas Gerulaitis in a straight sets win. Gerulaitis could find no counter to his opponent's powerful serve and strong ground strokes. Lendl had the crowd gasping with his power game as he cruised to a 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory. For Bjorn Borg the tournament was a triumph. The five times Wimbledon champion, serving from the near court, was short on match practice after playing in only two Grand Prix this year. His ranking had slipped to 265, yet in Sydney he beat the world's number one, three and five players. McEnroe had to contend with extreme fatigue in the oppressive heat. In the weeks, prior to the Akai tournament he had hardly been off the court, competing in tournaments in Japan and West Australia, then having to play two five setters before his match with Borg. The final point was won on a classic cross-court shot by Borg, who conceded only one set in his 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 victory.
