Visnews filmed Jan 30 the arrival by Comet 4 of Prince Philip at Madras Airport to a tumultuous welcome and the inspection he made at a State - controlled engineering works which build rail coaches for India.

Observers said the Duke received the most spontaneous welcome of his Indian tour in this historical city. Cheering crowds lined the road, specially decorated with arches, from the airport.

At the airport, British children with flags were among the crowds to wave to the Duke. He was officially greeted with the traditional garlands by the Governor of madras, Mr. Bishnuram Mehdi, and by Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. "Which is the garland which is so fragrant," the Duke asked. Mr. Kamaraj beamed, pointed to the two most fragrant: of camphor and of cloves and cardamom.

Thousands more wellwishers lined the 15-mile route to the coach works at Perambur. The Duke spent nearly an hour, inspecting the methods of coach construction. He drove between the workers, waved to them in an open car. The Luke arrived 45 minutes late for the tour - schoolchildren unmindful of the long hot afternoon crowded parts of the route to present him with flowers.

Many of the children and their parents are part of the majority of Christians who live in Madras and South India. Their forbears were converted centuries ago when St. Thomas reputedly lived in Madras.
