Background: Thousands of Ethiopian students are now working with villagers in rural areas in what the military rulers term "a literacy campaign" aimed at improving the lives of farmers.

The village of Sidamu, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) from the capital, Addis Ababa, is one of the 15 rural centres where the students are based.

The volunteers have been mobilised to teach illiterate villagers improved farm methods and basic health care. The project is, however, also intended to explain the socialist aims of the ruling Military Council.

The Council, when launching the rural development campaign in December, said it was to turn Ethiopia into a socialist state with a one-party system, direct government control over most of the economy and collective farms on government land.
