  • Description

Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore flew into Dar es Salaam yesterday (Saturday) for a two-day state visit before going on to Lusaka for the Non-aligned Nations Summit.

President Nyerere waived normal protocol to meet the Prime Minister at the airport. Normally, the head of state would only meet a fellow president, but the two leaders have been close friends for a number of years.

The two leaders will be flying to Lusaka on Monday, and in the meantime their talks are expected to centre on the Non-aligned Summit, as well as the question of arms supplies to South Africa. Tanzania has already threatened to leave the Commonwealth if Britain resumes weapons sales to South Africa.

Mr. Lee's programme also includes a state banquet and an address to the students of Dar es Salaam University.
