    THIRTY-THREE NEW ZEALAND ARMY ENGINEERS ARRIVED IN UBON, NORTHEAST THAILAND, ON MARCH 12 TO HELP BUILD A STRATEGIC AIRSTRIP AT MUKDAHARN, NEAR THE LAOTIAN BORDER.

    SOME SIX HUNDRED BRITISH AND AUSTRALIAN ARMY ENGINEERS ARE ALREADY WORKING ON THE 5,000 FEET AIRSTRIP DUR TO BE FINISHED IN JANUARY NEXT YEAR.

    THE NEWS ZEALAND CONTINGENT WAS MET ON ARRIVAL BY SIR STEPHEN WEIR, THE NEW ZEALAND AMBASSADOR TO THAILAND.

    WORK ON THE AIRSTRIP, SITUATED ACROSS THE MEKONG RIVER FROM THE LAOTIAN RIGHT-WING STRONGHOLD OF SAVANNAKHET, IN SOUTHERN LAOS, STARTED TWO MONTHS AGO.

    IT IS BEING BUILT BY BRITISH COMMONWEALTH FORCES FOR THAILAND UNDER THE SOUTHEAST ASIA TREATY ORGANISATION (SEATO) AID PROGRAMME.
