  • Description

More than 200 women from more than 40 African and Arab nations opened a six-day seminar in Algiers on Monday (4 March) to discuss women's roles in strengthening relationships between their countries.

The delegates will also be meeting in committee to hear reports and prepare draft resolutions on the fight for sexual equality, and on women's education as a major factor towards ensuring their participation in their countries' political, economic, cultural and social life.

In the early speeches, Mme Safia Ben Mahdi, Secretary-General of the Algerian Women's Union, called for active solidarity between African and Arab women and paid tribute to the fight by Palestinian forces against what she called "Israel's persistent policy of aggression and occupation". She also praised African independence movements.

Apart from the representatives of 30 African states and 12 Arab countries there were also delegations from African independence movements and observers from the Soviet Union and Cuba.

The seminar is being attended by the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen (North) and Yemen (South), Burundi, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Dahomey, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malagasy Republic, Malawi, Mali, Mauretania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zaire and Zambia.

It was sponsored by the International Federation of Democratic Women, the Algerian Women's Union and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
