Background: In Saigon, Vietnam, Nov 13, only a little more than twenty four hours after the crushing attempt to overthrow President Ngo Dinh Diem, a huge rally of Diem supporters was held in front of the National Assembly Building in the heart of the city.

Troops who had fought against the paratroopers who tried to storm the President's Palace, were garlanded by Vietnamese girls and congratulated by leading Diem supporters.

Following the rally at the National Assembly, a big procession moved along Saigon's tree lined boulevards to the President's Palace.

The crowd moved through the streets carrying banners calling for a long life for President Diem, and this sentiment was echoed in their shouts. As the procession approached the Palace, aircraft roared overhead.

At the Palace, a delegation representing political parties and civil servants called on the President to pledge their loyalty.

President Diem came out on to the steps of the Palace to meet the delegation, and later stood to wave as the crowd passed by in a hastily organised review.

It was the first time the President has been seen in public since the attack on the Palace in the early hours of November 11. Then as in 1955 when armed religious sects tried to storm his Palace, the President waited in the Palace underground command post for rescue.
