Background: A big torchlight parade to mark the seventy ninth birth anniversary of the late President Juan Peron, was held in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires on Tuesday (8 October). General Peron, who died in July at the age of seventy-sight, dominated the history of Argentina in recent years. He was President of his country from 1946 to 1955 when he was deposed in a coup d'etat, and was called back from exile in Spain to be reelected President in 1973.
General Peron returned to an Argentina in the throes of a bitter confrontation between Left and Right and did his best to smooth over the differences between his fellow-countrymen. However, he died before he could make much progress and was succeeded by Senora Peron. Since his death Argentina has been swept by a wave of continued political violence which has so far claimed more than a hundred lives, with Left and Right wing factions of the ruling Peronist movement and urban guerrillas settling their differences through kidnapping and murder.
The violence has done nothing to damage the memory of Juan Peron and he is very much alive in the hearts of many of the Argentine people today.
SYNOPSIS: The flaming torches of the marchers stretched out as far as the eye could see -- a symbol of the continuing popularity of General Peron.
