  • Description

Rampaging black youths have been widely blamed by West Indian community leaders in Britain for causing the trouble which led to a violent end for this year's Caribbean carnival in London. Last year's carnival, said to be the biggest of it's kind outside the West Indies, also ended in street fighting -- but then, police were blamed by black leaders for being provocative by their presence in large numbers.

SYNOPSIS: This year, police stayed at a discreet distance for the most part -- and those that did mingle with the crowd joined in the street dancing.

This was Sunday -- the final day of the massive two-day event -- which started off peacefully after some disturbances the previous night. But even with more than 100 crimes recorded overnight, mostly burglaries and violent robbery, police thought the figures relatively low for an event attended by a quarter of a million people. But as Sunday wore into evening, the carnival was to end in savage street fighting, stabbings, at least 16 police and more than fifty civilians injured, and hundreds of arrests.

And this is where it started, with carnival gaity turned into mob savagery by crowds of rampaging youths. A report form the scene.
