  • Description

World anxiety over the Turkish-Syrian crisis does not seem to be shared by the public here. They are pre-occupied with the steep rise in the cost of living and the severe shortage of consumer goods, including medical supplies -- the main issues on which the Opposition is fighting the coming elections.

Open-air meetings, at which fiery electoral campaigns are waged, are now in evidence throughout the city.

One such meeting - of the C.H.P., which stands for the Republican Party and the main Opposition, was held at the foot of the old Genoese tower of Galata. Party flags were everywhere and such slogans as "No goods for sale because of profit restrictions". "Line up, line up, and line up again. Is this is a sign of prosperity?". All have a bearing on the strict profit limitations now in force and the scarcity of essential goods.

Also in vociferous opposition was the Hurriyet Partisi (Party of Freedom) a prominent member of which is Hamdullah Suphi Tanriover, a distinctive gentleman with snow-white hair.

In the crowd at this Hurriyet meeting were a few in the audience who had brought with them their chaplets. Chaplets in Turkey are used to exhort oneself to patience. As each bead is fingered the word "patience" is repeated as in prayer.

The election campaign is now reaching its climax, and the party leaders are in the throes of winding up their appeals to the nation. The Opposition has been criticized by the Government for its negative attitude towards everything the Government undertook.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Monderes, has reviewed the achievements of his Government and attacked the Opposition for denigrating every initiative of the Administration, both internal and external.

Polling takes place next Sunday, October 27th.
