President Carlos Arana Osorio of Guatemala arrived in Taiwan on Saturday (June 17) to begin a four day unofficial visit. On hand to meet the president, who was accompanied by his family, were officials of the Taiwan government and foreign diplomats. President Arana was the first Chief of State to visit Taiwan since its expulsion from the United Nations last October.

President Arana and his family arrived from Hong Kong and were due
to return home on Tuesday (June 20) after vacationing in Europe and South-East Asia. The Guatemalan President was given a full military welcome at Taipeh airport. Officials of the Taiwan government, and foreign diplomats, were on hand to greet him. Later, President Arana was to meet Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek.
He was also scheduled to call on other government leaders, visit economic establishments and tour places of cultural interest.
President Arana is the first head of state to visit Taiwan since it was expelled from the United Nations last October, when the People's Republic of China joined the U.N.
