THE ALASKAN EARTHQUAKE... FIRST PICTURES FROM THE SMALL TOWN OF VALDEZ ON THE GULF OF?

  • Description

THE ALASKAN EARTHQUAKE... FIRST PICTURES FROM THE SMALL TOWN OF VALDEZ ON THE GULF OF ALASKA, 150 MILES SOUTHEAST OF ANCHORAGE. A FISHING CENTRE OF 1,000 PEOPLE, IT WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT COMMUNITIES, WITH 32 PEOPLE DIED AND OVER 90 PER CENT OF ITS BUILDINGS BADLY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED. THE LLYODS AGENT IN ANCHORAGE DESCRIBED VALDEZ AS 'A TOTAL LOSS'.

BESIDES FEELING THE DIRECT SHOCK OF THE EARTHQUAKE, THE TOWN HAS HIT BY A MASSIVE TIDAL WAVE, WHICH SMASHED A FREIGHTER UNLOADING AT THE DOCK ONTO THE HARBOUR FLOOR AND THEN LIFTED IT UP ABOVE THE ROOFTOPS. HOUSES, SHOPS AND CARS HAVE BEEN LEFT IN ONE TANGLED MASS, AND THE OIL STORAGE TANKS, RUPTURED BY THE SHOCK WAVES, WERE STILL ON FIRE YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) - FOUR DAYS AFTER THE FIRST SHOCK. THE COMPLETE POPULATION HAS BEEN EVACUATED AND THE TOWN IS ONLY OCCUPIED BY LABOUR CREWS CLEARING UP THE MESS.

LATEST DEATH TOLL IN THE 'QUAKE IS PUT AT 178.
