Background: For the eighth time since the Second World War, West Berliners went to the polls today to vote for a new City Parliament. Early results indicate the ruling Social Democratic Party will narrowly retain its absolute majority. During the last elections in 1967 they had only a slim majority.
The communist party, which had two percent of the total vote in 1967, isn't expected to do much better this time, going by the early figures.
