Background: INTRODUCTION: The fastest operational train in the world went into service in France on Tuesday (22 September). It is the Train Grande Vitesse (GTV) or high speed train. In the driver's cab on the inaugural run was President Francois Mitterrand. The train in intended to usher in a new era in high speed travel in France.

SYNOPSIS: Seven months after setting a new French speed record, the TGV has gone into service. The route -- Paris to Lyons, a distance of 400 kilometres taking two hours 40 minutes.Within two years, the time is expected to be down to just two hours.

The TGV was developed at a cost of 10 billion French francs (2,000 million U.S.dollars).Much of this was spent on new track which removed some of the twists and turns of the old line.Work began on the train five years ago after ten years of deliberation.Eighty-seven trains have so far been built.

When the train was first tested seven months ago, it exceeded 420 kilometres an hour. But on its inaugural run it only travelled at 290 kilometres an hour. But that is still faster than any train in service.

The link between Paris and Lyons will be followed by another to Geneva.Others routes to Britanny and Bordeaux, and possibly down a future channel tunnel will augment the service. On many routes it will be faster than aircraft, after counting the time spent getting to and from airports.
