General Charles de Gaulle, the former French President, took his wife to spain this week for a three-week touring holiday. The General, who has seldom ventured far from his country home at Colombey-Les-Deus-Eglises since handing over the reins of his country, looked fit and well as he arrived with Madame Yvonne de Gaulle at Santillana del Mar.
Crowds welcomed the couple as they arrived at the gaily decorated Parador Gil Blas for their first night's stay in Spain. Special security police were also on duty, but the General seemed pleased by the reception he was accorded by the local people.
During their tour, the de Gaulle's are expected to be guests of General Franco at the El Pardo Palace near Madrid. They will also visit several places which have religious and historical associations with France.
