  • Description

LAGHOUAT - A REMOTE TOWN IN SOUTHERN ALGERIA - WAS THE VENUE LAST WEEKEND FOR A SPRING FESTIVAL ATTENDED BY DESERT NOMADS FROM MANY PARTS OF THE SAHARA. THE TRIBESMEN SPENT THREE DAYS PARTICIPATING IN STREET DANCING AND SKILFUL EQUESTRIAN COMPETITIONS.

THE FESTIVITIES ARE VIGOROUS - AND THE ENERGY OF THE SUN-TANNED TRIBESMEN IS SOURCE OF CONSTANT AMAZEMENT TO VISITORS. MANY OF THE DANCES AND HORSE-RIDING EVENTS ARE HELD IN SCORCHING TEMPERATURES WHERE THE SUN BEATS DOWN FROM A CLOUDLESS, SKY, HOUR AFTER HOUR.

LAGHOUAT LIES ABOUT 430 KMS (277 MILES) SOUTH OF ALGIERS. IT IS ON THE MAIN ROUTE FROM THE CAPITAL TO THE RICH SAHARAN OILFIELDS AT HASSI-MESSAUD AND HASSI R'MEL. AT THIS TIME EVERY YEAR DESERT TRIBESMEN MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE TOWN TO TAKE PART IN THE SPRING FESTIVALS.
