  • Description

Tuesday night, police set up traffic barricades in certain parts of the Negro sections of Rochester, New York. They stopped and searched automobiles seeking both Negroes suspected of leading the rioters and armed white men. During the rioting in Rochester, a number of armed whites were arrested whom the police believe to be white supremacists. Police said the presence in Negro sections of armed whites could have triggered more violence, perhaps even touching off a racial war between whites and Negroes.

By Tuesday morning, relative clam appeared to have returned to the city. City officials prepared to lift the curfew imposed Saturday when the rioting broke out, and to end a ban on liquor and firearms sales.
