  • Description

Giovanni Leone, Italy's new President, was sworn in today (Wednesday Dec 29) in a ceremony culminating the stormiest and longest President election in the Italian Republic's 25-year history.

President Leone, a 63-year-old Neapolitan, is a former Christian Democrat Prime Minister. He won the election on the 23rd ballot obtaining 518 votes, just 13 over the required 505, after 16 days of balloting. He is Italy's sixth President.

Signor Leone had the backing of his own party, the social Democrats the Republicans and the Liberals. Opposing him were the Socialists (the biggest group in the former coalition Government after the Christian Democrats) and the Communists.

During the swearing-in ceremony, President Leone was escorted by Prime Minister Emilio Colombo, who the new President has persuaded to stay on as the head of the Government - thus avoiding an immediate political crisis.
