  • Description

On the occasion of the death of former American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, Britain's Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd paid personal tribute to the deceased as a friend of long standing.

In his speech of mourning Mr. Lloyd said:
Shortly before his death, May 20, Mr. Dulles was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Eisenhower. Mrs. Dulles who had received the medal from Major John Eisenhower, the President's son, took it to her husband's room in the Walter Reed Army Hospital and pinned it to his pyjama jacket. This medal is the highest decoration the US Government can give to a civilian. It was accompanied by a citation in which President Eisenhower said: "Inadequate though it is to express my gratitude of the nation you have served so well, it does stand as a small token of the affection and esteem that the people of America and of the world hold for you and your tireless efforts on behalf of freedom."
