  • Description

About 3,000 students from many British universities gathered in Trafalgar Square, London today (Sunday, 17 January) to hear speakers denounce the recent decision to expel the West German former student revolutionary Rudi Dutschke from Britain. The demonstration was addressed by a Left-wing British Member of Parliament Mr. Michael Foot.

The demonstrators, many of them from Cambridge University where the 31-year-old West German had begun post-graduate studies, had marched through Central London to the Square. Tariq Ali, the Pakistani revolutionary, was among them.

Dutschke arrived in Britain in 1968 to recover from head wounds received in an assassination attempt. On January 8 this year an Appeals Tribunal confirmed a decision by the Home Secretary, Mr. Reginald Maudling, that Dutschke be expelled for national security reasons.

Extra police were on duty for the demonstration today but there were no reports of trouble and the students dispersed after 90 minutes.

They had heard Mr. Foot say he believed the demonstration "would help to indicate to the country why we believe this expulsion is an important issue."
