  • Description

A black Rhodesian boxer defeated a white South African fighter in a multi-racial match at Salisbury's Glamis Ground on Sunday (7 May). The match was the highlight of an afternoon's aeries, in which three other white South Africans fought black Rhodesians. The bouts on Sunday reportedly marked the first time in a long period that multi-racial contests had been staged in Rhodesia.

The main bout featured Rhodesia's Mohammed Tar Baby pitted against Japio Pretorius, a former South African heavyweight champion. The two men were slated to fight for sight rounds of three minutes each. Throughout the contest, the Rhodesian kept up the pressure and at one point had Pretorius against the ropes. And at the end, Tar Baby was declared the winner.

Tar Baby's victory was part of a trend on Sunday, because in every case, the Rhodesians defeated the South Africans.

The crowd of several thousand were mostly Africans, but several hundred Europeans had come along as well. After each contest had come to an end, the Africans cheered the victory with enthusiasm.
