    SCORES OF NEEDY AND HUNGRY NEGROES LIVING IN MISSISSIPPI, IN THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES, RECEIVED FREE GIFTS OF FOOD ON TUESDAY TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN ON 12 FEBRUARY 1809.

    ABRAHAM LINCOLN WAS THE SIXTEENTH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND IS LARGELY REMEMBERED FOR HIS FIGHT FOR THE FREEING OF THE NEGRO SLAVES IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH.

    ALTOGETHER 14,000 POUNDS OF FOOD, MOSTLY FLOUR AND CANNED GOODS, WERE COLLECTED FROM PRIVATE DONORS IN THE NORTHERN CITY OF CHICAGO, IN A DRIVE PROMOTED BY NEGRO COMEDIAN DICK GREGORY.

    GREGORY HAD CLAIMED THAT NEGROES WERE DROPPED FROM FEDERAL SURPLUS FOOD ROLLS BECAUSE IN TWO COUNTIES THEY TRIED TO REGISTER TO VOTE.HOWEVER, FEDERAL AND LOCAL OFFICIALS SAID THE SURPLUS PROGRAMME HAD TO BE CUT OFF FOR FINANCIAL REASONS.

    HE PAID THE COST FOR SHIPPING THE FOOD BY AIR TO MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
