THE 1969 MONTE CARLO RALLY FINALLY BEGAN TO TAKE ITS TOLL OF CONTESTANTS TODAY (SUNDAY) BUT IT STILL APPEARED CERTAIN THAT A RECORD NUMBER OF CARS WOULD COMPLETE THE 2,000 MILE (3,200 KM) TREK TO MONACO. SIX CARS RETIRED THIS MORNING, BUT WITH CLEAR ROADS AHEAD ALL BUT A FEW OF THE 173 CARS STILL RUNNING WERE EXPECTED TO ARRIVE ON THE QUAYSIDE IN MONACO TOMORROW AFTER 60 HOURS ON THE ROAD.

ALL THE LEADING WORKS DRIVERS WERE UNPENALISED THIS MORNING AND THE OUTCOME OF THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST WINTER RALLY WILL NOW DEPEND ON THE SPEED TESTS THROUGH THE ICY FRENCH ALPS. AFTER REACHING MONACO, THE COMPETITORS WILL HAVE ONLY ONE NIGHT'S REST BEFORE EMBARKING ON THE MOST EXACTING STAGE OF THE RALLY -- A 930-MILE (1,500 KM) DRIVE THROUGH THE ALPS, WHICH WILL INCLUDE NINE SPECIAL SPEED TESTS.

THE LEADING 60 CARS WILL THEN BE NAMED FOR THE FINAL 12-HOUR NIGHT RUN STARTING ON THURSDAY.
