  • Description

The General Motors Corporation has developed an experimental vehicle for use in "impossible" terrain. The strange looking device has a jointed frame and four wheel drive; it is at home in rough country and in the water.

The vehicle is called the Sidewinder, after a small American rattlesnake. It has three basic sections. The driver sits in the first section. The center section contains a standard compact car engine and the rear section is for cargo or passengers. The units are connected to each other by pivot joints; they can roll and twist more or less independently without affecting the control of the vehicle.

The Sidewinder can move through country impassable to a normal car or jeep, and it can cross rivers. The designers say it handles equally well in mud or snow, in desert of swamp and can go almost anywhere. The design was developed as a prototype for a possible military vehicle.
