  • Description

Life in Lebanon is slowly returning to normal and on Sunday (29 February) the people of Beirut turned out in force to help clean up the filth and rubble left by nine months of bloody civil war.

Sunday's turn out started with a parade in the fashionable Hamra district organised by officials of the Ministry for Information and heralded the start of Cleanliness Week in Beirut.

During the last months of the war it was too dangerous for municipal employees to collect garbage and when the ceasefire came into force on 22 January the city was full of mounds of rotting garbage on nearly every street corner.

With the ceasefire now more than a month old the city's population seems to have taken on a new lease of life and is being encouraged to help put the city back together.

The start of the cleanup was a gala occasion with bands playing, flags flying boy and girl scouts, and municipal employees ???arching in the parade.
