Background: THE MUCH-DISCUSSED, MUCH-CRITICISED "UGLY AMERICAN" CAME TO THE SCREEN AT THE CHALERM THAI THEATRE IN BANGKOK, THAILAND, ON 25 MARCH AND TURNED OUT NOT TO BE SO UGLY AFTER ALL.

THEIR MAJESTIES, KING PHOUMIPOL AND QUEEN SIRIKIT OF THAILAND ATTENDED THE ROYAL COMMAND PERFORMANCE, THE FIRST WORLD PREMIER EVER TO BE HELD IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA. MANY NUMBERS OF THE MOBILITY WERE ALSO PRESENT.

MR. MARLON BRANDO, WHO PLAYS THE ROLE OF AN AMERICAN AMBASSADOR IN THE FILM AND MR. GEORGE ENGLUND, DIRECTOR-PRODUCER, APPEARED ON THE STAGE BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE.

IN HIS SPEECH, ACTOR BRANDO SAID HE CAME WITH A PURPOSE AND WOULD GO HOME WITH A DIFFERENT ONE. "THERE ARE TOO MANY AMBASSADOR HERE ... EVERY THAI IS AN AMBASSADOR. SINCE I HAVE BEEN HERE, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A FACE OF EVIL, NOR OF DESPAIR".

HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT IF EVER THAI COULD BE SENT OUT AS A MEMBER OF THE THAI PEACE CORPS, AS AN AMBASSADOR OF LOVE AND GOODWILL AND KINDNESS, IT WOULD EASE WORLD TENSIONS.

MR. ENGLUND TOLD THE CROWD THAT THE PREMIERE WAS "NOT IN THE GAUDY TRADITION OF HOLLYWOOD. IT HAS MORE THAN THAT. OUR WORK IN THAILAND WAS A GRACIOUS AND REWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR OUR CREW. IT WAS UNTHINKABLE THAT THE PICTURE HAVE ITS PREMIERE ANYWHERE BUT IN THAILAND".

AFTER THE SHOW, MARLON BRANDO SAID THAT THE FIRST SOUTH-EAST ASIAN WORLD PREMIERE COMPARED WITH OTHERS HE HAD ATTENDED IN THE UNITED STATES WAS "INCOMPARABLE".
