    Background: DAMASCUS, SYRIA

Four Palestinian organisations held a joint news conference in Damascus on May 21 to launch an alliance aimed at reforming the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and destroying the leadership of Yasser Arafat. General Samir Ghoshe of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front opened the conference on behalf of the movement, the Palestinian National Alliance. He declared the movement open to all Palestinians. The next speaker was the general secretary of the pro-Syrian Al Saiqa group, Issam al-Kadhi. He handed the platform to the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, general command (PFLP, GC), Ahmed Jirbil, who spoke out against King Hassan of Morocco. Hassan has been widely condemned in the Arab world for inviting a group of Israelis to attend a conference of Moroccan Jews held in Rabat on May 13 and 14. The Alliance has declared a policy of armed struggle against Israel and the rejection of what it calls "Zionist-imperialist" plans, which include the Camp David agreement. The four factions hold Arafat responsible for the Israelis' visit to Rabat. Abu Moussa, whose group of Fatah dissidents is the fourth component of the Alliance, declared Arafat was under pressure from Egypt to reach a settlement with Israel, rather than continue armed combat for an independent Palestinian state.
