  • Description

Bishops from all over the world were assembled on the patterned pavement in the foreground of St. Peter's Square. Behind them, the guards of honour of the Italian Armed forces...then the ordinary people who had stood for five hours waiting for the moment of crowning.

All eyes were upturned to the balcony hung with the standard of the Church, where on a six-foot tall platform at midday John 23 was to be crowned.

Then came the moment they had awaited: The Pope appeared on the central balcony to a massive surge of applause and shouts of "Viva il Papa".

The crowning was performed by the senior Cardinal Deacon, 84-year-old Nicola Canali, who last week announced "Habemus Papam" ("We have a Pope") to the crowds from the same balcony.

As he placed the crown in position Cardinal Canali declared: "Receive this tiara, adorned with three crowns and know that thou art the Father of Princes and Kings, Guide of the World and Vicar on Earth of Jesus Christ Our Lord."
The Pope adjusted the crown, gazed solemnly across the throng. Then rose slowly, and chanted his papal blessing, Urbi et Orbi - to the city, and to the world, as be had done in the moments after his election a week ago.

There was silence, as his firm voice carried through the loudspeaker. He made the sign of the Cross in several directions.

At the end after the Amen, the crowd thundered wildly, shouting "Long live the Pope" again and again. The master bell of St. Peter's began to toll. Its stirring notes were taken up by the other bells in a carol of triumph.
