  • Description

Calls were made at yesterday's (June 2) session of the Near East Animal Production meeting in Cyprus for a rapid increase in the region's livestock. One came from United Nation's Food and Agricultural Organisation Assistant Director General for Near East Affairs Mr. Mohamed Nour, who appealed for greater member participation in meeting the increased call for livestock and its products. VISNEWS covered the opening day of the week-long meeting.

SYNOPSIS: Calls for rapid increases in near East livestock production was made in Cyprus on Wednesday at a meeting of the region's Animal Production Commission.

The Commission, set up by the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organisation, heard Cyprus Minister of Agriculture Mr. Panayotis Toumazis make one of the calls for increased production at the opening session of the week-long meeting.

Mr. Toumazis said the Commission had an increasingly important part to play in co-ordinating and developing the individual member nation's efforts to improve standards of livestock. A regional study of the breeding and marketing of livestock, meanwhile, will be studied by delegates during the week.

Attending the meeting are delegates from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation, the United Nations itself, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, The Sudan, Syria, Egypt, Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Morocco, Somalia, the Yemen and the United States of America. Somalia was singled out for special attention earlier, during the opening speech by Mr. Mohamed Nour, the Food and Agriculture Organisation's Assistant Director General for Near East Affairs. Animal husbandry and the export of livestock was Somalia's economic mainstay, said Mr. Nour, and with help from the Commission the country was set for a rapid expansion in export of high quality cattle--to the benefit of many other countries with large populations to feed.

Mr. Nour--seen speaking here--said the livestock future of the whole near East depended on co-operation between its members. Otherwise, he said, any scheme to help them would fail.
