  • Description

You may remember a month ago, the Scimitar naval jet-fighter which shot off the deck after landing on the aircraft-carrier VICTORIOUS -- the first landing attempted after her seven-year refit. And although helicopters immediately attempted rescue, the fighter plunged under the water with the pilot, Commander Russell, still in the cockpit.

And today, after repeated salvage attempts here's the nose of the Scimitar slung from the one of two Boom Defence vessels which raised the aircraft and brought it into Portsmouth today to be unloaded. The badly-damaged wings had been cut away from the main fuselage. A spokesman said this had been one of the Royal Navy's most difficult salvage operations.

Commander Russell's body has also been recovered; an inquest was opened and adjourned this afternoon.
