  • Description

More than 10,000 demonstrators marched through Paris to the Chilean Embassy on Friday evening (February 22) to protest against the new Chilean Junta's ambasador to France.

Later as the march broke up police fired a barrage of tear gas grenades into the ranks of extreme demonstrators. They responded by charging towards the line of police with lengths of metal lowered like spears. Some Molotov cocktails were thrown.

According to eyewitnesses 10 policemen were injured in the charge. About 100 demonstrators were arrested. All but six were later released after identity checks.

Earlier in the day the new Chilean Ambassador, M. Fernando Duran Villareal, presented his credentials to President Pompidou.

The President told him the French Government attached great importance to the traditional relations which existed between France and Chile.

President Pompidou told the Ambassador he would find all the support he needed from the French Government to make his mission a success.

The demonstrators carried banners proclaiming solidarity with the Chilean people and denouncing political torture in Chile.
