    THE NEW THERMAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING PLANT AT VRIDI, 8 MILES SOUTH (13 KMS) OF THE IVORY COAST CAPITAL OF ABIDJAN IS NEARLY COMPLETED. BEFORE THE POWER STATION GOES INTO OPERATION THE STEAM GENERATORS WERE TESTED AT MAXIMUM PRESSURE.

    AFTER THE ENGINEERS' TESTS THE STEAM WAS RELEASED WITH A DEAFENING NOISE.

    THE NEW POWER PLANT WILL HAVE AN INITIAL CAPACITY OF 60,000 KILOWATTS AN HOUR BRINGING ELECTRIC POWER TO RURAL AREAS OF THE IVORY COAST FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT IS MIDWAY ALONG THE CANAL THAT LINKS THE PORT OF ABIDJAN WITH THE ATLANTIC. BUILDING STARTED ON FEBRUARY 20TH, 1967 AND THE COST OF THE POWER COMPLEX WILL BE ABOUT GBP3 MILLION STERLING.

    WHEN BUILDING BEGAN THE IVORY COAST MINISTER OF PLANNING SAID THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN ENORMOUS INCREASE IN THE COUNTRY'S DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY IN THE PAST TEN YEARS. IN 1965 A TOTAL OF 21 MILLION KILOWATTS AN HOUR WAS USED. IN 1966 THE FIGURE WAS UP TO 250 MILLION KILOWATTS AN HOUR AND THE NEED WILL HAVE MULTIPLIED FOUR TIMES BY 1975.
