    MEMBERS OF THE CHAD BASIN COMMISSION, WHICH BEGAN ITS SEVENTH MEETING MONDAY (AUGUST 19), IN LAGOS, PAID A COURTESY CALL ON MAJOR GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON, THE HEAD OF THE FEDERAL MILITARY GOVERNMENT, AT HIS DODAN BARRACKS RESIDENCE, TUESDAY (AUGUST 20). THE DELEGATES WERE LED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMMISSION, MR. GEORGE DIGUMBAYE, WHO IS MINISTER FOR PLANNING AND CO-OPERATION IN CHAD.

    THE CHAD BASIN COMMISSION, COMPRISING CAMEROUN, NIGER, CHAD AND NIGERIA, MET TO DISCUSS THE JOINT DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA. MR. DIGUMBAYE SAID AT THE TWO-DAY SESSION AT THE SENATE HOUSE THAT DELEGATES SHOULD MAKE A DETERMINED EFFORT TO OVERCOME DIFFICULTIES IN ACHIEVING ECONOMIC HARMONIZATION. FEDERAL NIGERIA'S COMMISSIONER OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES, MR. ALHAJI YAHAYA GUSAU, SAID THE ORGANISATION HAD PROMOTED THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE MEMBER NATIONS IN THE FOUR YEARS SINCE IT HAD BEEN FORMED.

    AT HIS MEETING WITH THE COMMISSION DELEGATES, MAJOR GENERAL GOWON STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING AND CO-OPERATION AMONG AFRICAN COUNTRIES. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE UNITY DESIRED IN AFRICA WOULD BE ACHIEVED IF NATIONS UNDERSTOOD ONE ANOTHER AND CO-OPERATED EFFECTIVELY, ESPECIALLY ECONOMICALLY.
