  • Description

North and South Korean Red Cross negotiators settled procedural differences over a full-scale conference on re-uniting divided Korean families at a meeting on Wednesday (9 August) in the border village of Panmunjom.

They decided that the first session of the talks will be hold in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang on August 30. A second meeting will be held in Seoul on September 13.

The accord reached at Panmunkom also covered the number of newsmen to accompany each delegation to the main talks and transport and communications arrangements between Seoul and Pyongyang.

The main conference had been due to start on August 5, but it was delayed because of procedural differences over the venue, the size of the press groups and a North Korean proposal that political and social leaders be invited to the initial session.

In a compromise settlement, South Korea apparently conceded the venue and North Korea gave way on the other issue.

An estimated ten million Koreans have been separated from their families as a result of the division between north and south.
