  • Description

"All our misunderstanding have been settled" jointly declared Cyprus Archbishop Makarios and former EOKA leader General George Grivas, Rhode Island, October 7.

They had conferred for four hours at the hotel in which the Archbishop is staying. Both arrived on the island in the afternoon - Grivas by ship from Piraeus, Greece, and Makarios by plane from Nicosia, Cyprus.

This is their first meeting since Grivas was ordered off Cyprus after implementation of the London and Zurich agreements.

Among the probable topics on the agenda were British military bases on Cyprus; possibility of Cyprus joining the British Commonwealth, and present activities of the Cyprus Constitution-drafting Committee.

In a statement to reporters, the Archbishop said on arrival: "I am particular happy because I shall meet today, after seven months, the heroic General George Grivas, with whom I have had links in common struggles, common adventures, and aims. Our meeting will show that the ties which link us are stronger and more solid than any temporary strains."
The Archbishop was, with the last remark, referring to recent acid exchanges between Grivas and himself.
